Ablate

Ablate refers to the process of removing or destroying tissue, often in a controlled manner, using various techniques such as lasers, heat, cold, or chemicals. In ophthalmology, ablation is commonly used in refractive surgeries like LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) to reshape the cornea and correct vision problems. The goal of ablation in these procedures is to remove microscopic layers of corneal tissue to change its curvature, which helps to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.

Ablation can also be used to treat abnormal tissue growth, such as tumors or lesions, in other parts of the eye. This process is highly precise, allowing surgeons to target only the affected tissue while preserving surrounding structures. For example, in cases of retinal disorders, laser ablation may be used to seal leaking blood vessels or remove abnormal tissue growth.

The ablation procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, and modern techniques ensure minimal discomfort and recovery time. The results are typically long-lasting, though the exact outcome depends on the individual’s condition and the type of ablation performed. Ablation is considered a safe and effective method in eye surgeries, with most patients experiencing significant improvement in their vision or the resolution of the underlying problem.
