Introduction to PRK/ASA Wavefront

ClearView Eye and Laser Medical Center of San Diego is proud to offer Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) or modern photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) as a vision correction option for our patients.

Custom PRK is similar to LASIK in that it is a refractive eye surgery that uses advanced laser technology to reshape the cornea of your eye.

The PRK/ASA Wavefront Advantage

Using the iDesign Refractive Studio which combined precise wavefront and topography imaging of the eye to personalize the laser treatment for your eyes, Dr. Sandy T. Feldman can correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. 99.4% of eyes achieve uncorrected vision of 20/20 or better six months after wavefront guided PRK using the iDesign refractive studio for nearsightedness, and an uncorrected vision of 20/15 or better in 92% of eyes. Patient satisfaction is extremely high at 98.8%.1

How PRK/ASA Eye Surgery Works

In re-sculpting your cornea, or the front surface of your eye, Dr. Sandy T. Feldman is able to greatly improve your eye's ability to focus light onto your retina. This enables your eye to function correctly and see much more clearly.

How Does ASA Compare with LASIK

  • ASA (Advanced PRK) differs from Personalized LASIK primarily in that it doesn't involve creating a corneal flap; the laser reshapes the cornea's surface directly.
  • The absence of a corneal flap may lead to a slightly extended healing period and a bit more discomfort post-procedure.
  • ASA (Advanced PRK) is often preferred for individuals with thin corneas, larger pupils, or those in high-risk careers or sports, due to its flapless approach.
  • Considered an off-label procedure, ASA (Advanced PRK) allows for a tailored treatment plan similar to LASIK, catering to individual visual needs.

Benefits and Risks of ASA (Advanced PRK)

Dr. Feldman uses the same advanced laser technology for PRK as for LASIK. Nationwide, 98% of patients using this technology see 20/20 or better following PRK. Many see even better than they did before with glasses or contact lenses. There are some risks, but they are rare and typically can be treated by Dr. Sandy T. Feldman after the procedure. These risks include under or over-correction, haloes, light sensitivity and dryness.
