IOL Implants for Cataract Surgery

Once a cataract worsens, Dr. Feldman uses an intraocular lens or IOL implant to rejuvenate your vision. These advanced intraocular lens implants improve distance and/or reading vision. While cataract patients used to require heavy, "coke bottle" glasses to see clearly after their cataract surgery, the revolutionary IOL implantation procedure restores clear vision.

As a refractive surgeon, Dr. Sandy T. Feldman is dedicated to reducing the need for glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery.  Some new types of IOL implants help accomplish this goal for both distance and reading, while other IOL lens options give only one type of vision.

There are a few types of IOL lenses available, "accommodating", "multifocal" and "aspheric".

Accommodating Intraocular Implants

Accommodating implants are the first artificial lens designed to mimic the function of a young eye's lens and increase vision range. It's flexible so it has the ability to focus in response to muscle efforts, just like the natural lens of someone's eye under the age of 40 would! It also treats presbyopia so most patients can read again without glasses or contact lenses.

Multifocal Intraocular Implants

Multifocal implants are designed to provide excellent vision at a variety of distances. The lenses are designed to correct both distance, intermediate, and near vision, day or night, so that the use of glasses or contact lenses is reduced or eliminated. It also treats presbyopia so reading is possible again. Some patients notice rings around lights at night making night driving difficult. However, as the eyes adjust to the lens, the side effects lessen or disappear.
