FDA Approves New OTC Eye Drop for Treating Redness

BREAKING NEWS: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just approved a new over-the-counter eye drop that significantly reduces eye redness. The non-prescription LUMIFY works by selectively targeting redness, which helps alleviate rebound redness and loss of efficacy over time.

“You can try all kinds of make-up tricks, but if your eyes are red you still won’t look your best,” said Sandy T. Feldman, one of the nation’s top eye surgeons and LASIK experts.

LUMIFY is the first and only over-the-counter eye drop developed with low-dose brimonidine tartrate for the treatment of eye redness. It works to reduce redness within 60 seconds, lasts up to 8 hours, and doesn’t contain any bleach or dyes. In clinical studies, LUMIFY demonstrated a 95% improvement after one minute. The drops also received a 95% satisfaction rating in a recent in-home-use-study with over 300 participants.

WHY IT’S A BIG DEAL: As Dr. Feldman explains, “Most eye drops work by constricting blood vessels in the eye. That may work for a while but it often leads to overuse, as patients tend to build up a tolerance. This new product is different because it only constricts select blood vessels, reducing the side effects so common in other eye drops.”

The active ingredient in LUMIFY, brimonidine, was first approved by the FDA in 1996 to reduce intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients.
